Yahoo has hijacked my new tab
Firefox v40.0.3, Win7 64-bit SP1 and up-to-date.
Somehow, probably due to a recent software install, Yahoo has hijacked my new tab behavior and I can no longer get to the New Tab tiles that I could do before when I create a new tab or new window (ctrl-t or ctrl-n). I have:
1. Changed the about:config browser.newtab.url entry to about:newtab; it was www.yahoo.com. 2. Removed Yahoo from the list of search engines and ensured that Google was at the top. 3. Followed the process at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-new-tab-page but I cannot find the cog icon on the New Tab page since I can't get a tab with the tiles (i.e. I can find the New Tab controls referred to on https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/hide-or-display-sites-new-tab-page).
I would really like my tiles back.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)
In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Remove Yahoo Anything. Now do the same in the computers Programs Folder.
Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.
After the problem is fixed, Bookmark and use this; Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

You may have ad / mal-ware. Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.
Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Many thanks, but this hasn't solved the problem. The only extension and software that I did not recognize was "More Results Hub" which has now been removed from both FireFox and my harddrive. Hmm...might have to restart the computer.
Hold everything, I spoke too soon. My first new tab still went to Yahoo. However, even before my anti-malware scan was completed (thanks for the suggestion though), I had to open a new tab and, lo and behold, my tiles are back. Didn't have to re-start after all.
More F&$*'n Magic but I think it was the extension and associated software that were causing the problem.
At least I gave me the impetus to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
