hi Massimo, for the moment updates are switched off this way by intention as a common startup crash in firefox 38.0 is under investigation.

This is sad. This is the second time that I know of (in recent times) that mozilla is releasing not ready for prime time versions. Which makes no sense to me when you consider they have nightlies and betas and all that, why wouldn't they just wait to release it officially when it's ready.

I am downgrading Firefox to a Microsoft kind of status (like we used to wait when a new version of windows came out so the early adopters could suffer and we come in when it's actually ready) where I will have to wait 1 week (or at least a few days) every time a new patch comes out for Firefox, just to avoid the initial problems.

@soundwave, the audience using nightlies and relase are quite different - some problems only surface once a version get's to a larger userbase. we need more beta testers to catch potential issues in an earlier state of developement: https://mozilla.org/beta

@philipp: I also have noted that in the last time (the last 3 Versions-updates) I'm not more able to use the most shortcuts (as cmd+w, cmd+h or cmd+q). The commands are only executable from the Menues. This is also sad! This seems to be not on every site, but more and more ... perhaps if the site works with some scripts that disable the shortcuts (bug?).

I think they need some kind of algorithm for seeing who would be decent for being a beta tester, and then gently push/suggest that to them.

Obviously you don't want to give tenuous users a broken beta that has them annoyed and dumping firefox for chrome or something.

If FF needs more beta testers they could push a message to users that fall in that appropriate category to see if they would opt into it, because I bet there's a bunch of users who would be interested in it who don't realize FF needs more beta testers or who just never thought about it. In any case ff needs some kinda plan to get more beta testers if they need more..., that's my suggestion

If a web page uses a plugin then make sure that the plugin doesn't have focus because in that case the key presses are passed to the plugin and won't work in the Firefox user interface. You can test this by clicking elsewhere with the mouse to shift the focus.

The automatic updates was going to be disabled for Wed to Friday anyways just like it was done with previous Releases like 37.0, 36.0 and on.

By the way the Firefox 38.0.1 is now out and have seen reports that users are getting updates to 38.0.1. It can also be downloaded at www.mozilla.org/firefox/all
