Black screen in Firefox

more options

On some websites, the Firefox screen goes black and at the bottom shows "waiting for encrypted.google.com" Then nothing further happens... it stays like that, with the "connecting" indicator spinning. These websites work properly in Google Chrome and in Internet Explorer; they only fail in Firefox.

I tried the suggestion, in a "Black Screenin Firefox" knowledge post, of pressing Shift while starting Firefox to go into Safe Mode, but pressing Shift while starting Firefox has no effect. Firefox just starts normally.

My workaround is to use Google Chrome instead, but if this gets fixed, I'd like to come back to Firefox. I like Firefox, for websites where it actually works.

Hello ernietamminga, any luck if you clear both cookies and the cache ? (probably only the cookies needed a cleaning but try it both) Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu, choose History, and then "Clear Recent History...".
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the "Clear Now" button.

Further information can be found in the Delete browsing, search and download history on Firefox article.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Yes, I did clear everything, and tried again. An instance of Firefox is now stuck on black-screen while trying to access the WooCommerce website. The "progress" spinner has been spinning for about five minutes or more now, and at the bottom the tiny banner says "waiting for encrypted.google.com". Yesterday this happened to me in the middle of a purchase I was trying to make on a different website. Got to the point of submitting credit card info, and the screen went black.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Implemented all of them, but the problem remains.

I'm trying to keep a list of the websites that won't work in Firefox, and use Google Chrome when I need to visit those sites.
