Greetings,

Before anyone gives me a response saying its probably my cookies, I've done that already after following the advice on another users post with the same issue.

I can login fine on all of my portable devices and Internet Explorer. I'm running Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition with the most recent stable build of Firefox (37.0.1 at time of post).

This occurs with all of my addons /extensions turned off.

Its not the login details that are wrong as I get a username and password error if I enter them incorrectly (I did it deliberately). I enter my details, the page goes back to the homepage as its supposed to but I'm not logged in.

I don't know if it makes any difference but when I go to Options>Privacy - If I select "Use custom settings for history", and click OK. When I go back into the menu its reverted back to the default "Remember history"

Have you tried deleting cookies for that site in case they have become corrupted (or an extra, inconsistent cookie is being sent)? While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

If the login page is on a different host name (e.g., www changes to login or account, etc.) you can edit the domain at the top of the dialog to check for cookies on that one as well.

Then try reloading the page and logging in again. Does that help?

One other reason that some websites might log you out or require password re-entry is if your IP address changes or other parameters of your connection change (this depends on the site's security policies). The most common reason for that in past threads was the connection setting:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button

Users with "Auto-detect" had problems staying logged in to some sites, such as Yahoo and AOL network sites. Using the default of "Use system proxy settings" or using "No proxy" resolved the issue in those cases.

When you mentioned turning off extensions, did you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any difference?

By the way, it's normal for the Privacy panel in the Options dialog to switch back to "Remember history" if you don't save any changes to the settings revealed by "Use custom settings for history".

You can remove all data stored in Firefox from a specific domain via "Forget About This Site" in the right-click context menu of an history entry ("History > Show All History" or "View > Sidebar > History") or via the about:permissions page.

Using "Forget About This Site" will remove all data stored in Firefox from that domain like bookmarks, cookies, passwords, cache, history, and exceptions, so be cautious and if you have a password or other data from that domain that you do not want to lose then make sure to backup this data or make a note.

You can't recover from this 'forget' unless you have a backup of the involved files.

It doesn't have any lasting effect, so if you revisit such a 'forgotten' website then data from that website will be saved once again.
