How do I get rid of tabs in Firefox 34?!

Seriously. I have been a LONGTIME user of Mozilla, but they are becoming too much like Apple in the sense that they are forcing a user interface on me without customization options.

I HATE tabs. I use ALT+Tab to switch between ALL Windows, and forcing my Firefox windows into tabs takes away my ability to do this efficiently. As a 20+ year computer user, I know what I like, and tabs do not fit into my style.

I just tried "Classic Them Restorer," but this doesn't solve my problem. It saves on space (another huge issue with tabs), but I still don't want tabs.

If I can't solve this problem, I'm finding a new browser.

I don't quite understand your problem. Is it tabs within ff or several ff windows. If its new ff-windows, why not open in new tabs instead of new windows ( under settings/tabs )

Hi Di_Bear, I think I can help, maybe all you need to do is change one setting.

I am not sure there are other modern browsers that are tabless. If you tried using the tabs you may find they are useful, otherwise skip the next paragraph.

Tab Navigation I understand you like just using the OS (Vista) shortcut Alt+Tab as you method of working. I do not see Firefox stopping you from doing that. If you prefer keyboard shortcuts to using the mouse note there are several for tabbed browsing including Ctrl+PageUp/Down & Ctrl+1-8

Window Navigation You apparently did not use the step in the question flow to provide full information so I do no see details of your settings. There is a setting you may wish to change. Uncheck the box:

Does it work ? I see no reason you can not work with individual Windows if you wish. Note you will have unused space on the tabs line if you only ever have one tab open, but you may utilise that space for other things. Other icons even bookmark toolbar content may be moved up there.

Please read the linked articles, try changing the setting, and post back with how you get on.

Hi, it isn't something I've tried, since I couldn't live without tabs! But the add-on Hide Tab Bar With One Tab might do what you want. Hope that helps.

There used to be an extension called Tab Killer however Piro the author has not kept it up to date with tab bar changes as the version on his site is from Nov 2009 and the one at a.m.o is even older Apr 2007.

You can come a long way with setting these prefs to open a link in a new window. See:

For links opened via JavaScript you can look at this pref:

Note that you can tear off a tab to a new window by dragging it down in the browser area or via the right-click context menu of that tab.
