SMTP server password required .. spam bug?

Stumped73

I have been receiving spam mails that look like they were sent from my own account. I do not use public computers so I know that I have not left something unopened for someone else to access.

For the past few months I have been getting the following message for each and every email I try to send out from Thunderbird "SMTP server password required". I would punch in my password several times as each time the message was error with password, even though I knew I had it right. I just thought it was a glitch with the Master password feature. Only to discover recently this was never enabled. I now suspect this "SMTP" message is indeed not from Thunderbird but from an outside source. Since then I have not punched in my password when asked, but then all emails are effectively blocked from being sent out.

Do I have a bug in the system and how can I reset Thunderbird to work like it normally did?

All help is appreciated.

have you clicked the remember password option on the dialog asking for it?

Yes, several times and that's why I am suspecting this is not Thunderbird asking. Usually you click remember password and the window doesn't pop up anymore. This one seems to ignore it like the password isn't good, so you keep typing it in thinking you made a mistake the first time.

But yet it still manages to download all my mail from the server. It just can't send out. Bad SMTP gateway??
