I was on my yahoo email account. Yahoo offered an update to Firefox 33. I opted to use this and to install. If I remember well, when I clicked on it, the screen went dark, it said something about encryption (I think) but none of the options that were offered worked (cancel/continue etc...). I tried to forcequit firefox but it would not let me. I tried to retsart but it would not let me. I finally unplugged the computer and things are back to "normal". Question: was it a bad idea to update Firefox from Yahoo? Do I have a "clean" version of Firefox or is it going to bring trouble later? do I have to restore the old version? I am really not computer savvy.

Yes, it was a mistake to accept the Yahoo offer to update Firefox. You probably received their own 3rd party version. Which from what I have seen posted here contains potentially unwanted extras.
The only place to get Firefox from is Mozilla. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
