Why does my standard FF home page keep getting changed?
Things get added to my FireFox start page. They are little animated dancing stars etc. Sometimes other art appears. All these things are links to some mozilla pages. I have to use the troubleshooting reset feature every couple of days. I suspect some sort of malware or addware.

That's normal for right now. Mozilla is using animations in the front page to promote Firefox 29. It should be gone in a few days. :)
You can get rid of it if you don't mind disabling snippet updates (that's those tips that appear below the search box).
- Type about:config into the address bar and press Enter.
- To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled "I'll be careful, I promise!".
- In the search box, paste browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl
- In the search results, double-click browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl. Delete all the text in the dialog box that pops up, then press the OK button.
- Type about:support in the address bar and press Enter.
- Click the Show Folder button.
- Right-click the Firefox taskbar icon and choose either Close All Windows or Close Window.
- In the Windows Explorer window that opened, open the storage folder, then the persistent folder inside that.
- Delete the moz-safe-about+home folder.
