My son wanted to watch a youtube video and he clicked on a pop up that said "are you sure you want to use safe search?". He accepted and then noticed the toolbar and all bookmarks were gone. I tried importing them, didn't work. Found a folder with old Firefox data with different dates of bookmarks but they say I don't have a program to open them. It's so frustrating, there were too many bookmarks to remember and the history would not be of any help. So I went ahead and defaulted Firefox settings, don't know if I made it worse. Any advice?? I told him not to click on these pop ups and if I have to take the PC to get fixed it's coming out of his allowance/gifts. I'm crushed.

Try to restore the bookmarks from a recent compressed .jsonlz4 the bookmarkbackups folder in the "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop.

  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose

The name of a JSON bookmarks backup file includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once.

  • bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.

Thanks for the reply :-). I found the files in the "Old Firefox Data" folder but they said they were unable to open due to not having a program???? Also they all seem to have been modified with yesterday's date when I was troubleshooting into the wee hours. Could I have lost them for good?

Do not open any file unless you have a program that is compatible.

In this case, you Copy files from the old profile to the new one, overwriting the current files in the new folder.

Warning ! ! Only Copy the files you are told. We will avoid anything that might be the cause of your problems. Here is the list of files;

cookies: Do not bother. Cookies will be created when you return to the web site. However, you will have to log in everywhere.

extensions(add-ons): it would be better to download them fresh.

==============

key3.db and logins.json: These are the Password files.

persdict.dat: custom dictionary – words you added to the dictionary

mimeTypes.rdf: What to do with what type of file.

places.sqlite: History and Bookmarks.

prefs.js: Your settings. Note, this may be contaminated.

Copy these files from the old to the new. You will get a message about the files already exist. Choose to over-write for each file.

The automatically created bookmark backups in the bookmarkbackups folder are special compressed .jsonlz4 files and can only be restored in the Bookmarks Manager (Library; Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks).

Restoring a JSON backup replaces the current bookmarks with the bookmarks in the backup, so you lose your current bookmarks.

FredMcD....thanks for all your help...but it's like Chinese to me :-(.

Cor-el, does that mean all is lost??

Would taking it to a local PC fixer store be of any use, or a waste of $$?

Thanks again.
