I have used the newtab addon for years. My home page is google.com. Just today, I get an error message when clicking the new tab button as follows: Blocked by X-Frame-Options Policy. Does anyone know what is going on here?

HI ffohl

I hope jscher's suggestion of New Tab Override solves your problem.

There may be yet still be bugs in Firefox around "Blocked by X-Frame-Options Policy" but this thread is not one of them :-) Indeed most of the cases reported in the "Blocked by X-Frame-Options Policy" i.e. bug1593321 have turned out to be false alarms :-) i.e. not Firefox bugs. Anyhow it's worthwhile to keep reporting them because there may be 1 or more pesky X-Frame Options bugs still in Firefox.

Cheers! ...Roland

Hi ffohl:

Just reading bug report that McCoy (thanks!) referred to is not enough to help unfortunately. We need further info from you to help fix this problem, please provide the following:

  1. What page you are visiting when encountering the problem?
  2. What addons do you have installed? Is it just the NewTab add-on? Does the problem disappear when you uninstall the newTab add-on? If so then ask the NewTab author to fix it or at least report it to the author.
  3. What error is reported to the web console? (Control Shift K to open the web console in Windows)

Cheers!

...Roland

Do you mean Custom New Tab Page: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/custom-new-tab-page/

It has a fairly unique approach and does use a frame, so pages that cannot be framed are not compatible (as mentioned in the description):

The technique this extension uses to keep focus in the address bar means the site you choose as your new tab page must allow iframing.

You might need to switch to a different one such as New Tab Override: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

Roland,

Thanks for your response. The only addon that I am using is "New Tab" which opens a new tab with the home page instead of Firefox default. My home page opens with google.com. I have used this addon for years with no trouble. Starting from just today, when I click on a new tab, I get the following error:

Blocked by X-Frame-Options Policy An error occurred during a connection to www.google.com. Firefox prevented this page from loading in this context because the page has an X-Frame-Options policy that disallows it.

The web console shows the following message: Object { url: "about:neterror?e=xfoBlocked&u=https%3A//www.google.com/&s=neterror&c=UTF-8&d=This%20page%20has%20an%20X-Frame-Options%20policy%20that%20prevents%20it%20from%20being%20loaded%20in%20this%20context.", timeStamp: 1591166902518, frameId: 8589934612, parentFrameId: 0, tabId: 10, windowId: 1 } This error page has no error code in its security info

When I open Firefox it opens to google without any error message. When i disable the addon, new tabs just open to the default.

I will report the problem to the author. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions, I welcome them.

That extension also uses an iframe and thus can't use web pages that prohibit this.
