Thunderbird is slow and locks up, in the last 2 versions, what has gone wrong

more options

OK as I said Thunderbird has become slow and locks up the GUI in version 45.3.0 started in the previous version, I have been a happy Thunderbird & Firefox user since the beginning, since I moved from Netscape, but now I am seriously thinking about moving to another email client, Thunderbird has become unusable my only extensions are Lightning & "Provider for Google Calendar 3.1" I was using "Google Search for Thunderbird" but I disabled it to try and solve this (no luck) have used these plugins for years, if you can then please help I love Thunderbird.

I uninstalled the default Ubuntu packages of Thunderbird and Lightning, it has helped a lot but the locking up/slowing down is still bad, it locks up the GUI when Thunderbird it self becomes unresponsive while it has a menu open, like the filters menu i.e. view: dropdown, or the Files button: or the right click menu, then I can move the mouse but nothing happens when I click etc.

are you running Thunderbird from a network share NAS or other non fixed disk?

no I'm running it from a desktops hard drive in both the 64 bit and the 32 bit cases, the problem nearly went away on the 32 bit after the latest version 45.4.0 but is still quite bad on the 64 bit

I've solved it sort of, by unistalling the mozilla stuff and going back to the ubuntu versions, goodbye ubuntuzilla
