i had to do a reinstall win 7 pro home edition from OEM disks. I have updated every thing I can think of. Windows update is up to date.

I set up gmail at first on pop servers, then switched them to Imap servers using instructions found on this website.

BOTH pop and imap is DEAD SLOW..

Any ideas??? its taking forever just to send a message..let alone get them.

well, i read somewhere skype was interfering with Thunderbird.. So I uninstalled skype.. uninstalled thunderbird, reset the computer, reset my comcast cable modem twice, hitting the reset button on the 2nd attempt.. finally got on line.. reinstalled Thunderbird, then skype, aand now everything is running fine..

No idea what caused the problem..

but this is solved.

Just to eliminate some obvious possibilities first: 1) Check the speed of your computer's internet connection when you access various websites. In particular, check how long it takes to access your Gmail account via the website (not via Thunderbird). 2) Send a few test messages to and from your Gmail account using the webmail interface (not using Thunderbird) to verify that it's all working OK. For information, I have four email accounts with different providers, all of which I access via Thunderbird. My Gmail account is nearly always the slowest to respond: there is a noticeable lag when I send a message, and copying a sent message to the 'sent' folder often takes a minute or so. I don't use it much for that reason; the other accounts normally respond instantly. I assume it's because Gmail is coping with a huge volume of traffic.

Yeah, I did all that.. even updated MS explorer which I never use.. My internet connection speed is fine.

Something somewhere is causing a slow down.. but Im starting to think its an issue with google mail and not my computer per say..

Update. Im running fire fox 44.0.1. I updated MS explorer to version 11.0.27

I can load everything up fast, except GOOGLE. If I go to google.com.. its dead slow. If I go to google search engine, its dead slow. If I go to bing, search engine, its perfect, instantly there.

Gmail is all but useless now..

Read somewhere where people had issues with Skype, so I uninstalled that.

Using Avast anti virus, and ran the software updater, everything is up to date. Re started computer, Google and gmail still dead slow. No idea what to do now.

If you have an Anti-Virus product scanning all incoming and outgoing emails then that AV program will cause a lag.

suggest you switch off scanning incoming and outgoing emails. Do not worry, AV will still scan any attachment you open and all remote content is disabled by default.
