I have narrowed this issue don to the 'Clear History When Firefox Closes' setting, I can do a refresh and only change the one setting and it will crash firefox when I go to shut down, it stops responding and I will have to force it closed or goto task manager to shut it down. Clearly something wrong with either the browser in a folder that stays when I delete firefox and reinstall, tried that too and it still happens.

The only other thing I could think of is if one of the anti-malware programs are doing it but I have 4 machines that this is not an issue and have the same setups in each, ith the exception of Microsoft Essentials. So I don't think that the other programs are the issue, I believe their is a folder that firefox uses that is not being removed, reset, what ever and firefox is the issue itself...

This is on a friends computer, I am trying to figure this out for him...

It has,

Malwarebytes Spybot 1.6 Microsoft Essentials

Places Maintenance {web link} Allows to run Maintenance tasks on the database that drives Places, the bookmarks and history module behind Firefox.

Open the Add-ons Manager. Locate the add-on and press the Options button. Select All of the tests. Then press Execute on the bottom.

Note: Some software, like Advanced SystemCare with Surfing Protection, can protect files in the Firefox profile folder against changes. If you have such software then check the settings or uninstall this software.

What items are you clearing via "Clear history when Firefox closes"?

Try to select only one at the time to see if you can determine the culprit.

If you clear the cookies then instead let the cookies expire when Firefox is closed to make them session cookies.

I can run through all the tests except Expire... When I check that one and run the tests it freezes again and I have to force it to shut down...

Don't know if that helps?

I can check all of the boxes under history, except 'Browsing & Download History', when I check that box it freezes again and I have to force it to shut down and do a refresh...

Thanks...

Hopefully this makes sense to you guys, lol...

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file (bookmarks, history) in the Firefox profile folder.

If the Places Maintenance extension can't repair the places.sqlite database file then remove all places.sqlite file(s) in the Firefox profile folder to make Firefox rebuild the places.sqlite database file from the most recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Well guys, I went into the localroaming and roaming folders and deleted the mozilla folders in each. Figured it would make Firefox a fresh install and it did.

I created a backup with Mozbackup but everytime I restore the settings the issue comes back. The biggest issue is the bookmarks but I guess its time to start over with firefox from scratch.

Everything works fine as long as I put everything in manually... So I'll try to add as many of the bookmarks as I can. Best fix, so far.

Very strange issue... Something became corrupt...

      • Okay update***

There were just too many bookmarks, lol... So I made sure that firefox was set to remember history before I began. Then I did a restore using mozbackup and only restored the bookmarks. Then I used the integrated bookmarks backup in firefox. I went back to LocalRoaming and Roaming and deleted the mozilla folders in both. Went back into firefox which is like a fresh install again and used the integrated import feature in firefox to recover the bookmarks....

I am now in business!!!!

What a freakin headache this was but now I can rest assured when my buddy gets it back, he won't run into any issues...

Thanks for the help all, wish I could of pinpointed what the issue was but a fix is still a fix and its like new now, lol...

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.
