Using the current version of Firefox, video on youtube plays fine, but I have yet to get audio to work even once. I've tried solutions ranging from starting in Safe Mode to editing options in about:config (all of which I changed back to their original settings after confirming they solved nothing). This problem has persisted for the past several versions of Firefox. Other Firefox users I know do not have this problem, but I can't figure out the difference that makes it work for them.

Is Firefox is completely mute in all HTML5 players, not just YouTube? For example:

That can be caused by Firefox sending audio output to a no-longer-available device, such as a headset or television. I haven't experienced that myself, but other users have reported that after reconnecting the missing device, they then could switch the audio back to computer speakers. Not sure if that is relevant to your situation.

All of the tests on the first site worked fine, as well as all but the .flac test on the second. YouTube is the only site I use to watch videos, and occasionally Facebook (which also has no sound), so I don't really have much else to compare it to.

I'm using a Dell Latitude E7440, and headphones, the built-in speakers, and my SRS-BTS50 bluetooth speaker all lack sound when the HTML5 player is enabled, but work fine when I use Flash.

I can't think of any reason for Facebook and YouTube to be silent, but the test site to be audible. You probably already tried "the usual" but just in case...

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or globe icon in the address bar > More Information > "View Cookies"

In the dialog that opens, you can remove the site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Try to clear the Flash local storage and settings.

  • Windows Control Panel > Flash Player > Storage: Local Storage Settings
    • Remove a specific domain: Local Storage Settings by site
    • Remove all domains: Delete All and Delete Data

Flash Website Storage Settings panel:
