Why cannot I just copy a profile from a different system to the profiles directory and changed the ini file

My main system crashed. I have copies of the profile. When I move a copy of the profile into the profiles folder and change the ini file to use the new name I get a message that there is an instance of thunderbird running and I need to close it. I do not see any instance of thunderbird anywhere in Task Manager. It just occurs to me that the fact that I am also running firefox may be causing the problem of an instance running. I am running V31.7.0

I tried moving just the mail directory into the existing profile. The thing is I cannot see any old mail. I can see all the subfolders of the inbox on the left but no messages in the right pain. I can see new mail but it is all in the Inbox and does not get filtered to the sub folder.

I tried to activate the multiple profile function but that does not seem to work.

MY BAD It seems I had something that was bad in the Profile. I recovered the profile from a backup and now Thunderbird is working just fine.

Sorry I did not catch the problem sooner.
