On an iMac, the firefox icon is replaced by a question mark icon on every start up. "verifying firefox" window pops up also on every restart.

I recently downloaded the latest version of firefox for my 2013 iMac with OS X 10.8.5. Every time I restart my computer the firefox icon is replaced by a question mark icon. If I click on that, a window pops up that says Verifying "Firefox." Is there a way to fix this problem (make start up of firefox normal)? I have selected Firefox as the default browser.
