When I check my plugins, the following three, very closely related (in my mind) plugins are listed, and the "Renderer" still shows "Research" when checking to see if it is Up-To-Date. It seems to me I don't need all three. I tried removing the Renderer (yes, I know how to do that safely), but Google seems to continue to reinstall it (with one or both of the other two...?)...I'll ask this on a Google Forum too, since it's their product, but wondered if anyone has any insight. I obsess about plugins that need "Research" - Thanks! I am having trouble getting Java to work in Firefox (Opera too) on Mac. http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre tells me "We are unable to verify if Java is currently installed and enabled in your browser." Notice that when I access the page, Firefox wants me to activate Java in a pop-up. I did this.

I know that Java is installed because I can open the Java Control Panel. The setting "Enable Java content in the browser" is checked and Security Level is set to High. I have tried setting the security level to a lower setting, but that doesn't help.

I have verified that the Java plugin is enabled. I have tried clearing Java cache via the control panel - no luck.

I realise that Apple has blocked Java according to this article: http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/01/31/apple-again-blocks-latest-version-of-java-through-os-x-anti-malware-system. I have been able to get Java to work with Safari (this doesn't help for Firefox) by editing the file /System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/XProtect.meta.plist, but that is only a temporary solution, as it shouldn't be necessary to do this edit.

Version details: Mac OS X 10.8.2 Firefox 18.0.1 Java version 7 update 11

Hi, I have a thing that's been bugging me for a while. I have Firefox locked down pretty tight. Do not track, no browser history stored and no cookies etc etc.

HOWEVER, whenever I open a new tab I get the blocks of "previously visited websites to chose from" with some sites I have visited in the past (though not all) even though I'm basically running in private mode all the time. I can go to the security settings and select "clear history" and they go away and I get blank boxes again. But every time it builds up and they come back. How do I stop this from happening? Because clearly it's saving my browsing history somewhere, somehow even though I'm asking it not to.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yahoo suddenly the default search engine after downloading something stupid I can't even remember anymore and can't find. Removed Yahoo in Firefox Preferences, trashed the application (Yahoo Powered Search), and STILL it comes up as the default. Firefox 48.0.2/ Mac OS10.8.5. Changing search engine in Preferences didn't work. Removing it entirely hasn't worked. Trashing it and emptying trash hasn't worked. Restarting Firefox and also restarting the computer after making the changes hasn't worked. Is there anything a non-geek can do that works?

so I noticed lately (the past ~5 weeks) that Firefox runs REALLY REALLY slow. I usually have 3 windows open all the time (one with about 7-8 tabs and the other two with 5-6 tabs, total of 20, maybe 25 tabs at some point but ends up going back to about 20 tabs at the end of the day)

it was fine for the past 2 years never had a problem. usually it takes about a week (or longer sometimes) before I need to restart my laptop to clear up some memory. but now I cant do it at all. as soon as I open firefox I will notice my laptop gets slower and slower and the fans comes on and laptop gets hot fast. CPU usage for firefox is high same with Ram.

here is what I did to try and solve the problem. I first updates all the add ons, didnt do anything. cleared the cash,,, nothing. disabled the add-ons. it helped but still wasn't fast enough. so I reset firefox and had all the add ons removed. still same thing. I deletet firefox and reinstalled it... still same problem. to confirm that my laptop is good enough to run those many tabs I downloaded google chrome to test it and I had three windows with a total of like 34 tabs (yes 34) and it was running fine. actually I think from now on I will be using chrome and not even go back to firefox due to how fast it was!! and its using 30% less of the memory too!!

I have been using Firefox since 08 and it was the best browser I have ever used and never looked at any other one. but I downloaded chrome to check and see if my laptop was the problem but now I know its the browser. I noticed that this problem only started when this update came on few weeks ago (not sure which one because in the past 5-6 weeks I kept getting those updates. I think I did at least 3 updates if not even more) but I am sure it was one of the 15.X updates. now I am running the latest update which seems like its even worse.

any help would be appreciate it. I am still trying to make this browser work but if this problem keeps going on then I guess I have no choice but to move on to a different one. I miss some of the features that firefox have over chrome.

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro. OS X 10.8.2, 320GB (with has about 72GB of free space), 8GB ram, 2.66GHz intel core 2 duo, running latest updates on everything and running Lion with the latest update too.

tried to search but kept geting those old thread and its locked now so cant post in it.

Thanks

I am on a MAC. I had my LIBRARY window open because I use it daily, mostly for bookmarks.

I wanted to delete some specific history links in the large window (with columns like Name and Location, Visit Date etc). I did not notice that the highlighted place was in the left toolbar under History so I accidentally deleted HISTORY--- Today, Yesterday and ALL of April. This is a business computer and this is a BIG problem. I tried several times under Edit to hit UNDO but it did nothing.

Why would Firefox not have some warning box to tell you you are about to delete a large amount of info? And why is it not reversible?

Also I am on my computer EVERY day for hours and the most recent bookmark backup point was today AFTER the large deletion of info mentioned above. And then the next previous one was April 23. So 2 more questions-- 1--why has it not auto backed up in almost 10 days? I don't do any manual backups. 2--does this restore point also restore history?

I have come across pages from time to time that try to prevent me from closing them by continuously opening dialog boxes. Generally these come up as pop-ups or hidden redirects from other pages, rather than from a site that I actually intended to visit. The only fix that currently works is to drag the offending tab into it's own window and ignore it. This allows me to continue browsing, but the only way to get rid of it is to force quit Firefox.

When I did a web search for a way to prevent any further dialogs from opening from a given page all I could find were repeated requests to get rid of the feature and no way to get it back now that it's gone.

My suggestion would be to make an option available, if it does not already exist and easily accessible to force close a tab. This action should kill any scripts that it might be running and close it with out permitting any dialog boxes, pop-up windows or any other action. Placing it in the right click menu alongside "close tab" would be ideal, though if this is considered dangerous in the hands of the average user then create it and use a preferences bit to enable it so advanced users can enable it themselves.

When I click on a PDF, a new tab opens. It gives me the option to open the document directly or save it--this is what I have preferences set to do. However, when I try either of those options nothing happens. It only opens a new blank tab. My specifications are below. I've run all the relevant software updates.

System: OS X 10.8.2

Adobe Reader: 10.1.5

Firefox: 18.0.1

I've seen this problem on other posts and I've done some searching on the web. I've tried the solutions that have been provided and worked for other people, however I noted that they were running older versions of some of the software, etc. Interestingly, I CAN open PDFs that come to me or that I send through Gmail.

I have done the following based on the advice I've seen:

Cleared my downloads list

Tried disabling the Adobe NPAPI Plug-In

In my Firefox preferences: I have set PDF documents to be open by Adobe. I also tried it with Preview. Neither of them worked.

I appreciate any help you can offer.

The last couple of versions of Firefox have seemingly been more permissive in the popup allowing. If I go to http://www.popuptest.com/popuptest12.html, all three popups open with a simple window.open() JavaScript call. The only one that gets blocked is when I click the back button. Shouldn't the ones that open automatically be the ones that get blocked? I've gotten quite a few ad popups, and it's making me wonder if window.open() is being ignored now.

When I download a file, Firefox does 2 things: changes the file name to gobbledy-gook of letters and numbers, AND, adds a .part extension -- therefore the files won't open. This is a NEW problem. If I manually remove the .part extension in the download folder, the file will open, but I still have the problem of the name change. I believe that the .part extension is supposed to go away when the download is finished, but that does not happen. Also, my downloads always used to come with their original name, not a numbers/letters name. Thoughts?

I'm trying to use Google Drive through my gmail account on Firefox.

When I click on the Upload button my only option is to "enable folder upload...", I click on that and get this message, "Enable folder upload Your browser doesn't support the uploading of entire folders. We recommend that you use the Chrome web browser instead, which supports folder upload. Alternatively, you can install a Java-based Folder Upload applet in your browser." I also get the option to "Download Chrome" or "Install Applet", and when I click on install applet the message "Java Applet installation failed" appears after a few seconds.

I'm running OS X 10.8.5, Both Firefox and Java are the latest version and enabled. I've gone into Java settings in System Preferences and made sure it was "enabled", I deleted the temporary files folder as well, I also cleared my cookies, cache and history in Firefox and restarted.

I don't know what else to do, please help, I don't want to install Chrome. Thanks, N

Hello,

On my website I have a SSL certificate installed so you can reach it via https://www.example.net and http://www.example.net. To administer my website, I access it over https but when I just want to see the changes or simply visit the website, I don't want to see the the website over https. I want to visit it over the http. However, since Firefox "remembers" this website can be reached over https even when I type in the address bar www.example.net it takes me to https://www.example.net. I have to manually remove the "s" or enter the full http://www.example.net address in order to see the website over http. While some may find this default behavior desirable, I find it annoying and should I wish to access the website over https I will enter the full address with https at the beginning. My question is, how do I disable the Firefox from defaulting to https connection? I'd not like to disable completely the auto fill feature if that's the only way to do it.

Firefox 20.0 on OS X 10.8.3.

Thank you, Goran
