Why is Firefox using 496 megs of memory?

According to my virus protector, AVG, I have routinely been using quite a bit of memory when I'm using Firefox. Is this true, and if so, can I reduce the memory usage?

Upgrade your browser to Firefox 8 and check

Remove or disable Package Installer & Install Conduit and see if that helps.

Since I haven't encountered the problem now in a couple of days, I would say that the upgrade solved my problem. Since I wasn't having it every single time, I did want to wait a few days after the upgrade to be sure it was correctly working, and now, I believe that I can say it is.

It looks like the upgrade to 8 worked.
