I can see the subject and even if that is the question, what are you trying to say. See my profile on the left, for how to ask a question.
I have no problems with Adblock Plus, it won't do anything if you don't install filter subscription(s).
See the "More effective pop-up blocking" section near the end of http://kb.mozillazine.org/Popups_not_blocked#More_effective_pop-up_blocking
You need to install the "Adblock Plus" extension along
with subscribing through its options to a filter such
as "EasyList" to effectively block pop-ups, and other
annoyances. You should also install a hosts file on
your system which will help with all browsers and
applications.

you also need filter(s) such as "Easylist" so after installing right-click on the status-bar icon and choose "Preferences" then on the Filters menu --> Add subscription --> EasyList https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1865/

Adblock Plus can be enabled/disabled at the Status Bar, so you can be more aggressive in what you block.
each filter you install and your own are separate, so they can still be maintained separately. Only applies to the Firefox profile you install it in.
Some filters I would add to Adblock Plus (see http://adblockplus.org/en/filters)

for difficult to suppress text advertising, be careful it is easy to wipe out (hide) the entire page with a slight mistake. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/4364/
Blocking Unwanted Parasites with a Hosts File
Blocking is at the system level http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
To view/use the HOSTS file offered above in plain text form

If you add any of your own you will have to keep them at the top
and manually include the online hosts.txt file below your own.
Hosts file is more oriented to protecting your system from the really bad or prevalent stuff by its hostname. Don't confuse it with antivirus protection either.
Adblock Plus works only on Firefox though there is an extension by the same name in Google Chrome by someone else. In any case you are going after the files not the hostnameand your can block ads from a domain you want to see or third party ads from places you wish would simply disappear. bring up http://www.cnn.com and you can use Ctrl+Shift+V (or right-click on ADP status bar icon and choose "View Blockable Items) you will see what has actually been blocked by ADP and the filter that blocked the item. The item may have brought up a lot of extra goodies if it is a JavaScript file (.js).
BLOCKED TOO MUCH -- with Adblock Plus -- No Problem:'
As seen in Preferences ("Ctrl+Shift+F"), ABP maintains separate filter groups - Filters you created yourself (Exception Rules, Blocking Rules, Element Hiding Rules) - Separate Groups for each subscription filter
The Blockable Items Report ("Ctrl+Shift+V) is where you go to see what is blockable, what is blocked, and if blocked what the rule is by hovering on the row with the mouse. It will also give the source, so you can see if it was your rule. The right mouse button brings up a context menu with options. Columns I show are {address, filter, type, state} chosen at the right of the headers. I sort on State so block items in red are at the top.
You can use the Report to make the changes you need. Changes you make will be seen in the Preferences.
