I have McAfee Antivirus Plus, and it tells me every day since I upgraded to 5.0 that firefox wants internet access to update files. Before I upgraded, this did not happen. What gives? Is this legit, or is something weird going on here? Please advise.

Firefox's default is to automatically check for updates once every 24 hours.

  • Turn off automatic updates, if you wish (Options > Advanced > Update) and check manually when you wish (Help > About Firefox > Check for Updates)
  • Allow permission in McAfee for the daily check to occur without notifying you (contact McAfree for instructions)
  • Change the frequency of the automatic update checking
    • type about:config in the URL/Location/Address bar and press the enter key
    • if you see a warning, accept it (promise to be careful)
    • Filter = app.update.interval
    • the default value is 86400 (that is one day in seconds, 24x60x60)
    • right-click the preference name in the lower panel, choose "Modify", enter your new value, click OK, close the about:config tab
    • The change may take effect immediately or you may need to restart Firefox for the change to take effect, I am not sure which.
