Can I prevent Firefox from attempting to restore all windows after a crash (even though I have set it to start with a blank page)?

Given that some of the open windows are probably what made it crash in the first instance, this is very annoying. Sometimes it gives me an error message apologising for not being able to load the pages, but often it just tries again.

You can do this by changing a hidden preference.

  1. Type about:config into the location bar and press enter
  2. Accept the warning that appears, this will then bring up a list of preferences
  3. Type crash into the filter box
  4. Double-click on the preference browser.sessionstore.resume_from_crash to change its value to false
more options

Set the pref browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes to 0 on the about:config page to get the about:sessionrestore page immediately with the first restart after a crash has occurred or the Task Manager was used to close Firefox.
