Everything downloads into a word doc...even when it should download in excel. how do i fix this?

I downloaded a doc the other day, but didn't have the correct app to open it. I selected Word to open it. Now EVERYTHING tries to open in Word. When I have an Excel doc to download, it will not because Word tries to open it instead. How do I fix this?
