I have searched without luck.

Either every thread I can find is about a slightly different version of the question, or none of the answers have worked.

I use Outlook Express 6. I'd like to move over to Thunderbird.

I have several GB of dbx files that I would like to import/transfer/convert and be able to access in Thunderbird.

I tried to use the import tool in thunderbird, but choosing "Import from Outlook" gives me the error: "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I don't see how this is relevant. Regardless, I have now selected outlook express as the default email action, but get the same error.

I have also tried the "Import from file" option, but the only options are "backed up profile", "calendars", "address books". It would seem to me that it would be common for people to move from Outlook Express to Thunderbird, so it seems bizarre to me that there isn't an option to import DBX files. I've opened DBX files in notepad before, I know they're just text, importing them should be a no-brainer. Do I have to write my own conversion program?

After some more searching, I found a suggestion elsewhere to use an older version of Thunderbird, Thunderbird Setup 17.0.9esr

I installed it, clicked "import", and it has detected Outlook Express and is currently importing.

Pretty shit software if an older version works and the newer version doesn't.

I guess I should have expected that - the only version of Firefox I use is an older portable apps version because the newer versions of that are shit too.

Get your fucking act together mozilla.

Support for Outlook Express was ended by Microsoft in 2014. They ceased supporting its replacement product Windows Live Mail in 2017 Back in 2011 when Outlook express was a "thing" I wrote this blog post to import DBX files because folk were beginning to appear with those only and no functioning copy of outlook express. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/search?q=dbx

How about you adjust your expectations to reality. When you are 10 years or more late to the party, support for what you are doing is most likely to be long ended.
