I want to talk with a Thunderbird agent for help. I'm not sure if this is the right way to communicate. Thank you for responding. I finally did get the help I needed when I returned home from travelling. A local business uses Thunderbird on a Mac like me. "Ionos", which hosts my website and web mail that goes to Thunderbird helped me on line to put in changes they require but that did not work for me. And I lost all my email except for the last week. Also mail wasn't coming into Thunderbird. It turns out my Avast had something to do with the muck up. It took 2 hrs. to solve the problem. My husband Uri Cogan passed on last Nov. He set me up with Thunderbird and took care of everything related to my computer. He was a volunteer helping here. Without him I am slowly learning what I can. I am finding out that most people don't really know anything outside their lane and any friend I asked was as clued out as I am.

There is no such thing as a Thunderbird mail server. Thunderbird is just an email client - a program running on your computer.

You will have an email address. It might be one offered to you by your ISP (Internet Service provider) or one you got for free from perhaps gmail. That email address can be accessed directly on the server using a webmail access via a browser. The emails are received on the server for that email address.

But you can use Thunderbird to read and send emails. You create a 'mail account' in Thunderbird for the existing email address. Thunderbird then accesses the correct server which has the emails and downloads them into the mail account so you can read them in thunderbird.

When you say 'I can't get email', you need to provide information, so we can understand your setup.

Q: What OS are you using ? Windows 10, MAC, Linux ? Q: What version of Thunderbird are you using ? Q: Have you already created a mail account in Thunderbird for your email address ? Q: Has it worked ok in the past or is it a new account and never worked ?

Q: Do you get an error message ? If yes, what does it say word for word - or post an image of the error.

Q: What server are you talking about? is it gmail ? Post the following information:

  • Menu icon > Help > More TRoubleshooting Information
  • Scroll down to 'Mail and News Accoutns'
  • Copy all the information and then paste it into this forum question.

Thunderbird is a free program and you can find free help via this official forum. Thunderbird relies on donations to help maintain the program, fix bugs, keep on top of security issues and maintain this website. There are no offices of people sat at computers and phones waiting for calls because it is a free program - there is no monies for that kind of vast expense.

All the people offering help are other Thunderbird users; they are not employees of Thunderbird and they may be anywhere in the world. They work in an unpaid capacity volunteering their time to help others.

If you want technical assistance from a person then there is nothing preventing you from paying for their time and expertise as you would do so to fix a car. The 'techie' may offer remote assistance but be certain the person is fully conversant with Thunderbird and is a legitimate help source.
