Hello,

To make the tabs smaller, you will need to do an about:config tweak to allow the usage of compact mode (why did they make it harder to do, I don't know).

WARNING from the moderator team: Changing Firefox pref from the about:config page can sometimes break Firefox or cause strange behavior. You should only do this if you know what you're doing.

You will need to turn on browser.compactmode.show in about:config to enable compact mode in the customization menu (right clicking top and clicking customize)

This may not be the perfect size you want, but without userChrome.css tweaks, this is the best you can get.
