How to make bookmarks and top sites open in the same tab (like it used to be)

Until today (2021-11-16) I've been using v68 on Android from a manually installed APK.

I've finally bitten the bullet and updated to the latest Play Store version.

I now find that all my bookmarks and top sites open in a new tab.

This is a fundamental change in behaviour from how it used to be and it is extremely annoying. It also must be eating up RAM and various system resources (this is an assumption; I'm not a coder/programmer). It is also wasting my time, by making me close tabs that I don't want. Yes, I know I could just leave them to automatically close after a certain time, but I just want the browser to behave like it used to - and like pretty much every other browser out there.

Is there a way to make a bookmark or top site open in the same tab that I currently have open?

I've seen something about going to about:config, but that just opens a blank page, so it's useless for changing any setting. (If I were able to get there, I am confident about changing settings).

Hi

Thank you for your feedback.

About:config is currently available in the Beta and Nighty versions available fromt he Google Play store.

In respect of the bookmarks this is something that our developers are aware of and are looking into. You can follow progress and leave comments at:

I've installed Nightly (96.0a1 Build #2015845995) and in about:config there was no setting "browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInTabs" so I created it as a boolean.

The behaviour is exactly the same whether set to true or false: a bookmark always opens in a new tab.

This is the about:config setting I found on the web. Is there in fact another one I need to change?

In the new Firefox for Android, many of the settings are included in the GeckoView engine and are set when the app is built. As a result they cannot be changed through about:config.
