When the incoming mail has a big attachment (cca. 20 Mbyte) and I park to (on) that mail, it uses a lot of memory (over 250 Mbyte) and 25-30% of processor for minutes and during this time nothing can be done with Thunderbird. I noticed it with new new version (both 32 and 64 bit), but maybe it could be an older behaviour.

Could it be due to your antivirus scanning the attachment? What is the AV and its settings for email?

I use the Microsoft Defender on Win 10. I excluded the map where the email are with the big attachment. Now it is possible to use the Thunderbird, I can navigate between maps, emails, but the processor usage was again 30% for a long while and the memory usage went up to 700 Mbyte.

If you want to troubleshoot CPU and memory usage, the best option is to go through the list here:

I checked the mentioned page, and started to test it on the way suggested. 1. I use the latest Thunderbird: 91.2.1 (64 bit) 2. Start Thunderbird in Safe Mode I saw that in this case it runs in single thread mode. It then worked mush faster a consumed much less memory and processor. I use only one Add-on: https://www.updatestar.com/dl/emoji/emoji.html After restarting Thunderbird in normal mode and disabled this Add-on the slowness and memory and processor consumption returned. I don't know what other settings are changed with the Safe Mode, so I cannot test it any further. I'm not a developer of Thunderbird, so I have not time to follow the other suggestions. I don't want to experiment with the os until I cannot use the whole pc. Sorry.

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode Safe mode] also disables hardware acceleration (Preferences/General/Indexing) and applies the default theme and layout. First, disable acceleration in normal mode, restart TB in normal mode, and see if performance remains the same as in safe mode.
