Change What prints on Headers Option removed Page Set up

The print dialog box has been changed, Now I see no way to add or modify custom Header text. I am all for simplification and streamlining, but not dumbing down so much to the point of removing functionality which is seemingly has happened here. Used to be able to change the text as shown in attached picture "Page Setup"...is this just gone now? Please help, now I will have to try in another browser or use a sharpie.

Hi jflagler. Can you attach a screenshot of the new print dialog box where things are missing. On macOS I still see the options to set headers/footers, so maybe this is just an issue on Windows?

Also, do other browsers even support this? I checked on Chrome and don't see a way to set the headers/footers at all (other than turning them on/off).

Hi Jonathan, I think jflagler has the new print experience, which is still in testing. It can be enabled/disabled in about:config, at least for Windows:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste tab_mo and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the print.tab_modal.enabled preference to switch the value between true and false

Hi jflagler, I don't know whether there are going to be nice selectors for those settings somewhere with the new dialog or whether you'll need to edit preferences in about:config. To switch back to the old style for now, please see the previous preference.

JS2000-Will try that and see if it solves it and check the soved box if it does.

Jonathan-On my windows pc I also tried Chrome, MSIE, and MS edge, and they all look almost identical to this new FF print dialog box. Its as if FF followed the dumbing down of print options to make the U/I slicker looking(which it does), would suggest FF Dev. keep the slick look but not strip this option so FF can be a browser that does things the competition does not do. Of course saying that, based on counts I can see on this post in terms of needing this particular once standard feature, there is probably not that many users that may need the feature and may see having to mess with it as cumbersome!

I'm going to describe how to manually edit headers and footers. Hopefully there will be an alternate UI for this, but I am not aware of one coming soon.

Headers and Footers are split into three parts each of which can contain free-form text and placeholders that Firefox replaces with values computed at print time. The placeholders are:

  • Title => &T (placed in Header-Left by default)
  • URL => &U (placed in Header-Right by default)
  • Page number of total (x of y) => &PT (placed in Footer-Left by default)
  • Page number (x) => &P
  • Date/Time => &D (placed in Footer-Right by default)

Here is how you can update your header and footer content for particular printers or all printers:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

Headers

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste print_h and pause while the list is filtered -- you'll see something like the first screenshot (the exact number of custom preferences depends on how many different printers you have used)

The following three preferences are the default, but any printer-specific value overrides them, allowing you to customize individual printers:

  • print.print_headerleft
  • print.print_headercenter
  • print.print_headerright

To edit a default setting, double-click in the implicit second column (wide area to the right of the preference names before the pencil button) or click the edit button. Press Enter to save your change, or click the blue checkmark button.

To modify a setting for a particular printer, you have two choices:

(A) To have Firefox use the default setting, delete the current custom setting using the trash can at the right end of the row for the custom setting.

(B) Edit the custom setting as desired.

Footers

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste print_f and pause while the list is filtered

As with headers, the following three preferences are the default, but any printer-specific value overrides them, allowing you to customize individual printers:

  • print.print_footerleft
  • print.print_footercenter
  • print.print_footerright

Edits work the same way for footers as they do for headers.
