I clicked on the update button last night - running 81.0, and the update was for 81.0.2. When I went to open the browser all that I got was a line at the top - FF would not open. I backed up the profile, and did a clean install. When I finally got the backed up profile installed, it opened properly once and everything was there. When I opened it again, no book marks, and none of the buttons worked. FF didn't close properly, and I had to use Task Manager to shut down.

I ended up downloading the beta version, and it's worked just fine. The original profile works, so all bookmarks are there.

I see that FF released 82.0 this morning. Is it safe to try to install it, or is the beta version that I installed last night really 82, just hours before it was officially released?

The only way to know is to give it a try.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

The last 82.0 Beta version (build 2) should be the same as the actual release as this release is meant to verify that the build works. However if you install the Beta version then you are placed on the Beta update channel meaning that you will update to Firefox 83 beta versions and receive updates twice a week. So best is to install the full Firefox 82 installer over top of the Beta release.

You can find the full version of the current Firefox release (81.0.2) in all languages and all operating systems here:

Will installing the full version over top of the beta version force me to use the backup of the profile again, or will it simply use what is there now?

I had to install the 82 beta version to get it to work and allow me to use the old profile. The 83 beta was installed this afternoon - will it go back if I install the full version of 82, or do I wait for 83 to be released?

One thing that I forgot to mention - the 81.0.2 was the 32 bit version. No idea why that was installed by the installer when first installed on this 64 bit machine. The beta that I installed is 64.

It is possible that you need to remove compatibility.ini in the profile folder if Firefox refuses to use your current profile that has been used by the beta version.

I tried installing 82, and I'm back where I was last night. Clean install, all Mozilla files removed. Replacing all of the profile files with the original. It worked with the 82 beta.

This is what I was getting last night when the update first installed - image attached.

Either that, or the first time I open Firefox all of the bookmarks are there. If I open it again, nothing.

The only add on is AdBlocker. Basic security, and it's all worked until the 81.0.2 update last night.

I've tried reinstalling the 82 beta and 83, that now doesn't work either.

I'm stumped and frustrated... A lot of bookmarks will be lost.

A Firefox version on the Beta update channel (default-beta.xxxxxxxx) would use a different profile than a release version (default-release.xxxxxxxx), so you may have to transfer data from the Beta profile to the release profile.

Firefox 67 and newer use a dedicated profile and lock this profile to prevent other Firefox installations from using this profile.

Got it.

For someone who runs into the same problem....

I did a clean install, removing Firefox and the Mozilla maintenance service, then going into app data and deleting the Mozilla folder in both local and roaming folders.

Reinstalled Firefox, using the latest update, which in this case is 92. The I pasted the backup profile folder in the profile folder for both local and roaming. I did delete the compatibility.ini file in the backup profile folder in both local and roaming. May not have been needed in both, but I could and did just to be safe.

In Firefox I opened "about:profiles." I deleted the default profile, and then clicked on "create a new profile". Then NEXT, and Choose Folder. I selected the backup profile file and clicked finish. This selected the backup as the default. Tested opening Firefox several times, bookmarks and noted that passwords worked. I deleted the "beta" folder so all that is left is the original backup folder.

Making a copy of this for the next time I have to move a profile to a new computer.

Thanks to all for your help and suggestions.
