Firefox fails to open links from external apps

Firefox for Android is set as my default browser for opening links. But every time when I click a link in another application, the page does not load. Firefox opens, but it just shows whatever tab I last had open (along with whatever other tabs I had in the background). It does not even load a new blank tab. If I quit and restart Firefox then go back to the external app and click the link, Firefox opens and DOES succesfully load the link. But obviously that is a workaround, not a fix. These results are the same whether or not I have enabled "Always restore tabs". Tab queueing is disabled. I am using Firefox for Android 68.10.0 on Moto G5 Plus with Android 8.1.0. Thank you!
