sent mail not being saved

When I send an email I get a dialogue box telling me the message is being saved to sent box but nothing happens i.e. the dialogue box just sits there until I delete it and nothing appears in my "Sent" folder. If I change the settings so that sent messages are saved to a "Local folder" they get saved in the local "Sent" folder. If I then drag and drop the message from the local "Sent" folder into the mailbox "Sent" folder it moves into the mailbox sent folder just fine. It solves the problem but is a bit tedeous. Any suggestions? I'm using Plusnet as my ISP. PS if I use Windows 10 Mail as a client my sent mail disappears altogether.
