When clicking on a link in mail, it opens two tabs, a blank one and the one with the link. How to stop this?

I am using Apple Mail on a Mac. This has been going on for some time but to add to the annoyance the window containing the link material loses the main toolbar menus at the top, it says "Firefox" but the other menu items are missing. Another question on this issue was from a Windows User but has not yet been resolved.
