A week ago, when starting Firefox, the message 'updating Firefox . . . ' appeared before the progrom loaded. I've seen this before and it has always continued to load Firefox. This time, after some hard-drive activity, the program did not load. I started looking for support and chose to uninstal v72 - shut down my laptop and restarted it. I downloaded the latest version and at the end of install - where 'run firefox' is expected - nothing happened. I have since uninstalled and downloaded the latest beta version (73) - and now, when I ask to run the program, it opens a window but all the tabs are 'dead' and no matter what I type, the program does not connect to the internet (i.e. Google search or direct to a known web address). If I select settings, I can see the drop-down list - but if I select 'Add-ons' (for example) - nothing happens. I attempted to run my laptop in safe mode, but I have no recall of the password needed to get past the login screen. Is there anything simple I can do to bring my Firefox back to life?

well - would you believe it - installing v70 has everything working smoothly again - may not be as secure - but so good to have my tabs back and working. Thank you for your assistance and support. Wonderful Firefox community.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Note: Firefox comes in three or more folders on all computers. They are;

Maintenance: (Programs Folder) <Windows Only> Firefox itself: (Programs Folder) And two folders in the profile of each user on the computer for each Firefox profile for that user.

If you remove the Firefox folder, the user profiles would not be affected.

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86) Note: Check Both Folders

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Look for, and remove any Mozilla or Firefox program folders. Do not remove the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

Do Not remove any profile folders.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

Sadly, even after removing the Firefox folders in the Program and Program x86 folders in Windows, a fresh installation is still not a working version of Firefox. I did run a registry checker (cCleaner) before making the fresh install. I restarted my laptop before making the fresh install. The latest fresh install opens and shows tabs - but I cannot open the tabs to connect to 'new' internet data content. I type a web address and the little dots keep running, but no webpage loads. I have Chrome, Vivaldi and Opera all working normally . . . . just no life in Firefox!

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see
