Normally when I close three windows with a number of tabs, they open up without any problem. Sometimes I open one of the closed windows by opening recently closed windows. This time nothing comes up. And the recently closed windows (and tabs) is empty. Also, Bing has become my home page, which I would never chose myself. It happen 7th December 2019.

Any Idea what casuses this. It is very anoying, since I cant remember all websites I visited or rather saved.

Type about:config into the address bar and enter.

Search for browser.sessionstore.max_tabs_undo (This preference defines how many tabs can be restored in Firefox) Double-click the preference and change it to another value if you want to increase or decrease it.

Then Search for browser.sessionstore.max_windows_undo (This preference defines how many closed windows can be restored in Firefox) Double-click the preference and change it to another value.

To reset any value that you have modified, right-click the preference and select the reset option from the context menu that is displayed to you.

This normally happens when Firefox isn't creating or updating the files in the sessionstore-backups folder and creates a sessionstore.jsonlz4 file in the main profile folder when you close Firefox.

Backup the session files in the sessionstore-backups folder in the Firefox Profile Folder to make sure not to lose possible important session data. Do NOT close Firefox when Firefox is already running.

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

  • previous.jsonlz4 (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.jsonlz4 from previous session that was loaded successfully)
  • recovery.jsonlz4 (latest version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • recovery.baklz4 (previous version of sessionstore.jsonlz4 written during runtime)
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.jsonlz4 to replace the current file (make sure to backup the current sessionstore.jsonlz4).

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
