When will Thunderbird 60.9.1 tell me about Thunderbird 68? And tell me to upgrade?

I am using Thunderbird 60.9.1 on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. I have Thunderbird notify me of updates, and I stay current with them as they appear. I accepted the upgrade to Thunderbird 60.9.1 just a few weeks ago. In "About Thunderbird", the current app says, "Thunderbird is up to date. You are on the release upgrade channel."

But apparently, there is a Thunderbird 68. It has been out since late August 2019, over three months ago. Thunderbird's update mechanism has told me nothing that I recall about the existence of Thunderbird 68. I find this surprising. Surely, an update mechanism should have some way of telling me that there is a new major version for me to consider. It might even offer me help making the upgrade (or maybe, migration).

When will Thunderbird 60.9.1 tell me about Thunderbird 68? When will it proactively let me know about the new major version, and point me to information so that I can make an informed upgrade decision? Should it have already done so? Since I have heard nothing, should I file a bug report about this? Should I instead have received an email announcement from the Thunderbird project about Thunderbird 68?

And at what point with my current Thunderbird installation suggest that it is time for me to upgrade? Will it make this suggestion at some point? Should it?

TB 60 will offer updates to 68, either automatically or manually from Help/About TB, through the program itself, as soon as the developers are confident the process is ready for wide deployment, with few if any glitches. You will see a notification in TB at that time, or see the new version offered in Help/About. Emails will not be sent to TB 60 users, which was the same policy with previous updates.

You can of course download and install 68 now if you wish. The release notes for the various versions in the 68 branch are here.

If you have add-ons that haven't yet been, or never will be, updated for 68, you may want to visit the add-ons' websites to assess their status before committing to 68, as downgrading to 60 is more complicated than in past versions.

Thank you. This is helpful information. I would like to see this in the Thunderbird UI for updates. I would also like to see this in "Install, Migrate and Update" https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/products/thunderbird/install-migrate-and-update . That is the page I looked in when I was looking for information on the topic.
