I am running 4 instances of TB on 2 PCs. Two times Windows and two times Xubuntu. TB works fine on 3 instances. The problem on the one Windows Thunderbird instance is that it takes more tan 30 seconds until the small window appears where I can type in my smtp server password. I never store passwords on my PC so that I have to type it every time I want to log in. The problem occurs when I upgraded TB to the version 68.x.x. Meanwhile I changed to the 64 bit version, but this effort did not succeed. Now TB is installed in version 68.2.1, buildt 20191030212137, 64 bit. Everything else works as expected. In safe mode TB is connecting immediately. With all addons shut off it takes the 30 seconds ... That is why I assume that none of the add on is disturbing. What parameter/value do I have to check? Thanks Ronald Sometimes I can see a message in the bottom line: Überprüfe den Funktionsumfang des Mail-Servers ...

If it connects right away in safe mode, but not if all add-ons are disabled in normal mode, it could be due to one of the other factors that are defined by safe mode. Launch TB in safe mode, check 'Reset toolbars and controls' and click 'Make changes and restart'. Any difference?

I am very sorry but it does not solve my problem. The restart procedure was different. It took longer to open and show my IMAP folder and also my network based calendar (nextcloud) did not appear at once. All together I could type the password after 27 seconds into the mask.

Thank you very much and kind regards Ronald

On the problem Windows computer, did you start Windows in safe mode?

more options

No I did not start Windows in safe mode. Everything works fine except the delay of that small sign in screen. My other Windows computer is doing well as the xubuntu instances do too. I remember that there is a setting in the "extra>settings>advanced" menu where users are able to work on the configuration at their own risk, but I do not remember what setting is the correct one to change. Cheers Ronald

Just to recap: it connects immediately in TB safe mode, but not in TB normal mode when all add-ons are disabled, and not in TB normal mode after resetting the toolbars and controls. That leaves factors such as userchrome and userContent css files and hardware acceleration untested.

Unfortunately that is correct. I just now deactivate all my (4) add ons and restarted TB and it was as slow as before. Afterwords I activated the add ons and restarted TB with the same result. With the old version of TB 60.x.x TB connected immediately and I could type ma password. Now I see all old mails in my IMAP inbox and also all entries in my calendar. After the 30 seconds I sign in and the inbox gets updated. I doubt it could be an issue of my hardware. It is the same computer running Xubuntu with TB well doing just on another hard disk.

If t works in safe mode, can you try creating a new profile. Start Thunderbird with -p or use about:profiles in "Help > Troubleshooting Information".

(but do not delete the old profile)

Hello, meanwhile I created a new profile as recommended. The start procedure came up with the same delay and I did not find my add ons except lightning. I do need "MyPhoneExplorer" to transfer my calendar data to my Android devices.

It is a pity that the ProfileManager requires a complete restart of my Windows system every time I want to use it - takes time .... In the end I deleted the test profile and TB comes up with my old profile and I can use the add on MyPhoneExplorer.

I assume that there must be a possibility to check and change some value in the settings in order to make an immediate start possible. Menu Extra>settings>advanced ...

Thank you very much Ronald

Right now I tried to start TB in safe mode again and found that the delay is there. Maybe three seconds shorter but it is definitely there, sorry for confusion. Ronald

I will be more direct than Wayne. Please restart your computer in safe mode with networking and see if the delay you see disappears. It is a standard diagnostic process that has not been undertaken.

Hello Matt, ok, I did the procedure with Windows in safe mode and found the same problem unfortunately. Also I updated TB into 68.2.2 version but the problem still exists.

Thanks and kind regards Ronald

just to check things out. Save your password and see if it takes the same 30 seconds for it to show something about getting mail in the status bar.

I am thinking it might be an external source, if the delay is the same, that might lead us to look outside Thunderbird as it is only one of four.

During the connecting process I let TB store my IMAP password and restarted TB using the stored password. But TB came up with the same delay as with manually typed password. There is no difference.

Only sometimes I can see comments in the status line. TB is connecting ... or TB is checking the account ... Ronald

I would like to ask another question about TB. Where can I open the other issue? I could not find the link to an other question...

It is about copying the profile from the newest windows version (TB 68.2.2) into the linux version which is TB 60.9.0 I managed to copy the Mail folder and that works fine. Now I can see all my local Mail folders in my linux system. But how can I copy my address book? Using the export and import function leads to a loss of my several mailing lists. What files do I have to copy to have it all together equal on both systems?

Thank you very much Ronald

If you have other questions unrelated to the current thread, post them as a new question.

If your mailing lists are in the Personal Address Book, you can copy abook.mab from the Windows profile folder into the Linux profile folder, while TB is closed, overwriting the existing file. This will retain the mailing lists.

You move the whole profile, not just something with the add-on.

The address book issue does not work like expected. Before I installed the very new TB 68.2.2 I copied the profile to the other OS or PC and it worked. Now I tried to copy the profile and found an English menu while I am using the German one and also I missed the calendar. The xubuntu TB is an older version: 60.9. No problem I just renamed the old profile and deleted the one I copied from windows out of the TB 68 version. Afterwords I copied the Mail folder and abook.mab and history.mab and found in my xubuntu environment the whole address book including the several mailing lists I use. Copying the hole profile did not show my several mailing lists which part of the contacts folder.

Meanwhile I read that it should be possible to export the address book using the LDIF option but I did not try it until now... Now I am just happy that TB is working on all systems except the delay in one Windows 10 universe. Kind regards Ronald
