How can I stop Firefox from opening and unless sequence of empty windows when I start it?

I am experiencing a CRITICAL Firefox Problem. When I clicked on a link at the Apple site, Firefox started adding blank windows at a ferocious clip. By the time I could quit the application (the only thing I could think to do), 47 empty windows had been added. I spent quite a bit of time closing all the new windows.

I have quit the program, shut down my computer, unplugged the power and restarted.

Foolishly, I clicked the culprit Apple link again. Now I cannot stop the cascade of window openings unless I force quit Firefox. If I dare open it again, it picks up where it left off. This is “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” in real life! I know that I have in excess of 50 empty windows and I cannot stem the tide. Besides rendering Firefox useless to me, it is rapidly eating up disk space.

The only thing I can think to do is go to an app like AppDelete, eliminate every trace of Firefox and download it again. Obviously, I would lose all my History and extensions.

Please tell me you have a better idea.

I am running the latest version of Firefox under OS 10.11.6. I cannot update to a later operating system.

Desperately,

F. A. Ford

Did you select Firefox as the application to handle this file/link when you got an 'open with' download dialog?

You should never select Firefox in such a case because the result is a repeating action and if you would select automatically then you can only stop this by closing Firefox. You need to remove this action.

Thanks, but no. I simply clicked on the link as I have done a thousand times before. I had changed nothing in Preferences.

Currently, I cannot access Preferences, my Profile nor any other file that might alter behavior. Each attempt to open Firefox brings only a torrent of empty windows.

If I download a new copy of Firefox and install it, will this give me a fresh application and retain my extensions, Pocket, etc.?

It appears that I need to somehow kill what is going on before I can do anything else.

I am forced to use Safari for these communications.

BTW, the Apple link I clicked was entitled simply “Get El Capitan”.
