Earlier today I updated my copy of Firefox on a Windows 10 PC to the new 64 bit version of Firefox 55. Since doing so, all of my bookmarks have disappeared, and newly created bookmarks are not displayed in the browser.

This is regardless of whether the bookmarks are imported from .html file or other browser.

I have since re-installed Firefox and it is still the same after having deleted personal settings and changed some settings as recommended on the help pages.

But I still have this issue: : I have never encountered this problem before.

Can someone please advise? The PC concerned runs Windows 10 and has 8GB RAM with more than adequate hard disk space available.

A download of Firefox 55.0.2 64 bit version has corrected the problem I originally reported a few days ago.

I now regard this issue as closed.

Many thanks.

And I must also ask, why is Firefox 55's performance so sluggish?

It is possible that your firewall or other security software blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program. Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container if present from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to install for Firefox and the updater process. Concerning the speed issue, I have amended Windows Firewall settings. This may resolve that issue.

However, concerning the bookmarks, I have been through the options suggested in the links above but to no avail.

When I run the Places maintenance add-on, it first tells me that it cannot recover any stats, presumably because I have just made changes to file places.sqlite as described. Then it displays a message saying "Checking integrity". But how long is this meant to last?

Would you mind going into more detail how you are importing your bookmarks and what the version of the new install of Firefox is?

What changes did you make regarding places.sqlite?

  • presumably because I have just made changes to file places.sqlite as described

I installed the 64 bit version of Firefox 55 today. It is running on a Windows 10 PC.

When first installed over an older version of Firefox (which displayed my bookmarks), the new version immediately failed to show the bookmarks. So I imported them from another browser but to no avail.

A removal and re-installation of Firefox followed but still to no avail. And the previous links have not helped yet although the integrity check of Places maintenance I mentioned previously is currently running, but it might have actually hung. It is difficult to tell.

Concerning the import, I have saved links from another browser to an .html file, then opened this file in Firefox in the Library as shown below. If I select the Import and Backup menu and Import Bookmarks from HTML option, Windows gives me a file selection prompt. Upon selection of the file though, the Library prompt in Firefox remains empty.

This is where I am now.

Trying to restore a backed up set of bookmarks also fails. So does manually creating a new bookmark.

As per https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/ I renamed places.sqlite and also xulstore.json.

Both files have subsequently been recreated by Firefox but the bookmarks still do not show after 'import'.

I have the same problem accompanied of others, not only i can't add or recover my bookmarks but i can't even use themes and even can't install any extensions, and what is worse i can't i even rollback to 54.0.1 because i end up with a problem where the browser will say some sites have security issues and i can't open them because of this, like Google... Even after a clean installation of 54.0.1, and after failing 55.0, the situation is the same. By the way the problems i just described only occur on standard user accounts, my administrator account is working fine. As you can see from the attachment, the bookmark bar is completely empty and the right click menu has some options hidden for some reason. Edit: i just noticed that i can't watch youtube videos in full screen anymore...

which security software do you have in use?

Kaspersky Total Security

I use Windows Defender Security Centre as part of Windows 10. I also have Malwarebytes Premium. Both tools run in real-time mode and have not affected earlier versions of Firefox.

Yesterday I mentioned that I found Firefix 55 to be rather slow. Despite changing Windows Firewall settings, this version of Firefox still seems slow to load a page. This is compounded by having to wait until files for web services, JavaScript etc. used by a page: Firefox only responds after they have all downloaded.

next to the security software already in place, can you please also run a scan with various other security tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner & eset online one-time scanner.

I uninstalled the 64 bit version of Firefox 55 earlier and deleted the various profile settings created in the C:\Users\...\Appdata folders, and installed the 32 bit version of Firefox 55. However, I find that the same problem remains.

I have also tried disabling both Windows Defender Security Centre and MalwareBytes Premium, but Firefox 55 does not import bookmark. I have also tried running the browser as an administrator but to no avail.

I am not convinced that this issue is to do with security tools because if I visit a given web page, and use the the buttons by Firefox's search box to add a bookmark, it does not create it. The Bookmarks Bar remains empty.

Can anyone advise? It would be a shame to delete Firefox permanently.

Is there anything shown in the "browser console"? (Ctrl+Shift+J)?

I also have this problem, no bookmarks, history, etc. I've tried a complete uninstall of 54, cleaned out registry entries, etc because I had the same issue of 55 saying it was installed but not completed and didn't show up in the FF update history report. Installed 64bit 55 and still the same problems. The browser is super slow to the point where I had to use another browser just to send this message. I installed the maintenance add-on but it hung at checking integrity. Also every add-on, even the installed defaults are listed as Legacy as if none are supported in 55.

Trying to customize FF 55, the customization screen is blank, bookmarks are still blank, tried to update bookmarks from restore and FF gives an "Unable to process backup file" tried importing from HTML and same issue. It's as if I'm using a bricked FF because it does nothing.

I ran Malware-bytes (free) to make sure there was not something malicious affecting the browser, ran Wise to make sure there wasn't a plug-in/extension conflict. Disabled antivirus completely to test FF and still is almost unresponsive with blank menu screens, etc. Visiting websites also freeze for some time before completing loading. I've tried everything. Running Windows 7.

I maintain two networked computers. On the Windows 7 PC, there is a version of Firefox 54.0.1 32 bit on , I have no problems with history, bookmarks and so on. However, this PC will not be updated to Firefox 55 at this time. Firefox says that it is up to date anyway.

The problems with history, bookmarks and so on, occur with the Windows 10 PC as described elsewhere in this thread. As for the use Browser Control, there is content: the following is today's log showing all message types.

Assistance would be welcome.
