Sometimes reply window isn't focused

Sometimes when I click on Reply (or choose a reply format from its drop-down menu) the reply window is focused, as one would expect. Other times, however, the original window retains the focus. (I haven't figured out any pattern.) This is annoying at best, and can be a real nuisance at worst - if one doesn't realize that it's the original window that still has the focus, highlights something to be deleted in the reply and hits Delete, the whole message is deleted!

Is there some reason Thunderbird doesn't consistently give the reply window focus?
