You're welcome. There shouldn't be issues like these after updating. It is possible that other (security) software has caused problems with the prefs.js file or other files in the Firefox profile folder.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

Make sure that toolbars like the "Bookmarks Toolbar" are visible.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars
  • View > Toolbars
You can tap the Alt key or press F10 to show the Menu Bar
  • Right-click empty toolbar area

Open the Customize window and set which toolbar items to display.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize
  • check that "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is on the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar then drag it back from the Customize palette to the Customize window to the Bookmarks Toolbar
  • if missing items are in the Customize palette then drag them back from the Customize window to the toolbar
  • if you do not see an item on a toolbar and in the Customize palette then click the Restore Defaults button in the Customize palette window to restore the default toolbar set.

Thank you cor-el. Your first suggestion worked. After I added the sidebar icon to the toolbar and clicked it I was able to make both bookmarks visible. Great! Again, Thank you.

I am disappointed that the update did not work out of the box, as Firefox updates always have in the past (I've been using Firefox from its inception and am a loyal fan). Hope there are no more issues.

cor-el, you are amazing! After fixing the bookmarks issue, I kept having other problems and running out of time and patience, abandoned 46.0.1 and reinstalled 45.0.2, which runs perfectly. I will just wait for the next upgrade. (not being flippant, I am a Realtor and use my computers daily to manage my real estate business so downtime is simply not an acceptable alternative)

However, your mention of prefs.js really caught my attention. I guess that you are not only really smart but also clairvoyant. I have recently been getting failed DownloadThemAll plugin download failures with the error message blaming "a prefs.js failure". This totally mystified me because I have no earthly idea what prefs.js is. For the record, I also don't know anything about a "Firefox profile folder" either.

You also mentioned security software. I recently received an AVG Internet Security upgrade which I installed.

I would appreciate any thoughts and suggestions you might have time to give me.

Thank you, David

PS: How can I stop the annoying, distracting and unwanted upgrade to 46.0.1 popup notices? They are almost as irritating as the MS 10 popups. Shame on Firefox.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
