firefox 40 (Linux) opens with white window, no menus no content.
Firefox 40.0.3 (Linux version 3.19.0-26-generic (buildd@lgw01-05) (gcc version 4.8.2 (Ubuntu 4.8.2-19ubuntu1) )
Start Firefox (either from shortcut or from command line); window opens but has only the title bar, plus max/min/resize buttons. Tried clicking blindly, no response. Same thing happens with "firefox -safe-mode" and "firefox -preferences". Hot keys seem to work on the blank screen; for example Ctrl-N produces another blank one just the same. "firefox -private" gives a blank window but with the correct window title ("You are now browsing..." etc ).
Tried completely deleting $HOME/~.mozilla and $HOME/.cache/mozilla/firefox but that makes no difference.
Highly inconvenient; can't use FF at all in this state. [NB posting from a different machine altogether; ignore the version and plugin data below]

Found the source of the problem. To fix the black-text-in-the-address-bar problem last year I included
lockPref("gfx.xrender.enabled", false);
in the global Firefox profile. Knocking out that line make FF 40 behave properly again. It doesn't have the black text problem either, at least not so far (I have a dozen machines with different hardware specs so I can't be certain).
