hi about 2 days ago ff stopped working. i type an address into the usual window like i've done a million times, hit enter, and nothing happens. i click on a bookmark, the url shows up in the address window, but nothing happens. there are maybe 3 bookmarks that still work, and all the rest are duds. auto-complete still works, but firefox refuses to take to the address. i get a lot of "flash crashes" (thanks, adobe) so i recently updated flash, and that started the problem. this is why i distrust updates. (for the record, i keep current with firefox updates, even though it is still bloatware that uses 2 GB just to run 3 windows. anyway, any help you could offer would be most... helpful! (not sure why my exclamation points are printing as open-brackets, but hey, whatever, that's the internet) thanks, tim

I'll give it a try today. BTW, not sure if this is relevant, but my CPU Usage often wildly fluctuates from 2% to 100%.

Dammit! Another "Flash Crash"... what is it with Adobe Flash? No matter how many times you update it, it's still unstable jittery bloatware waiting to take your computer down. (sigh)

Let's try this; Totally remove ALL video pluging / programs. Other than no videos, how is Firefox working. Then reinstall only one plugin. Any problem?

Grab the uninstaller from here: Uninstall Flash Player | Windows Uninstall Flash Player | Mac Then reinstall the latest version.

Separate Issue; Update your Flash Player v16.0.0.235 https://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/distribution3.html Shockwave Director v12.1.5.155 http://get.adobe.com/shockwave/

I did as you suggested. then I checked to see whether Flash was well and truly dead. It is. but so is FF. I restarted it in normal mode and it's still broken. Only a small handful of bookmarks work, one of them being my main email, thank god. so i went back to the email containing your latest transmission and was able to re-enter our discussion. But as for typing an address into a window, the autocomplete works but i can't go to that address. as before, there is no error message or anything, it just stares stupidly at me when i hit return, which used to be enough before all this trouble started. (And all this trouble started when I updated Flash, which was crashing almost daily and even the latest version crapped out twice today. Who writes this code, the North Koreans?!?

...so it looks like even though Flash is crap code, removing it did not help FF performance, so I reinstalled the latest version.

And I am genuinely grateful for your help. Please don't let my frustration hide my gratitude.

Oddly enough, once I reinstalled Flash, I have started getting popups nagging me to install it, which I already did, according to all the prompts. This is very discouraging. how many times does one have to install the same piece of software before it is actually installed?

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift (Mac Options) > key, and then starting Firefox. Is the problem still there?

I've been running FF in safe mode and it works great. Where I kept screwing up was trying to reintroduce the suspect add-ons one by one, because that involves running FF in normal mode, and in normal mode it won't do much of anything. So I have a bit of a "Catch 22" on my hands.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode.

Type about:addons<Enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; <Control>(Mac:<Command>)<Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions. Disable a few add-ons, then Restart Firefox.

Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues. Disable All of them.

If the problem continues, disable some more (restarting FF). Continue until the problem is gone. After, you know what group is causing the issue. Re-enable the last group ONE AT A TIME (restarting FF) until the problem returns.

Once you think you found the problem, disable that and re-enable all the others, then restart again. Let us know who the suspect is detective.

Tim, can you post a currently up-to-date list of your extensions? Here is how to extract that:

  1. Use ONE of these methods to open the Firefox Troubleshooting Information page:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click on help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information.
    • Type about:support into the Firefox address bar and press the enter key.
  2. At the top of the Troubleshooting Information page that comes up, upper left corner, you should see a button that says "Copy text to clipboard". Click it.
  3. Now, come back to your forum post, right-click in the reply box and select Paste from the context menu (or else click inside the reply box and press the Ctrl+V keys) to paste all the information you copied into the forum post.

As you scroll down, you will find a section named Important Modified Preferences. You can delete from there to the end as those are unlikely to vary between Safe Mode and normal.

Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.

In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers, click it and select Submit.

Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.

I am querying the unsubmitted reports and the first one is taking a reeeealy long time to load. When you add that to the fact that FF has refused to send most of my reports (it is never offered as an option in the crash window, not for months now), re-submitting the reports could take a veeeery long time.

So, it shows me a big rundown of one of the crash reports, but I do not see a Submit button anywhere (see below), but I DO see a Sign In button, which is silly because I just signed in seconds ago. not a confidence-builder. (sigh) Sorry to be such a pain, honestly. (blush) OOPS.... the system will not let me post "PrtSc" screen-caps anymore. It just gets better and better. :-/

OK, now I have two random holes in my FF window showing the desktop beneath. Refreshing the screen does not make them go away. I fear the worst.

EDIT: Closing facebook made the aforementioned holes go away. Man, the WWW is a weird and dangerous place.

Hi TIMSPORES, if you can view your crash reports on the Mozilla crash-stats server, you can copy/paste the page address from the address bar.

This thread is very long now, so it's hard to remember what you've already done. Have you already disabled the protected mode of the Flash player plugin? That feature has security benefits, but is not compatible with all systems for some reason.

You can disable the feature by creating or editing a settings file. The following pages/posts provide different approaches:

Thanks, J, I'll give it a try. (Heck, at this point, I'd try pouring coffee into the keyboard if I thought it would do any good.)

OK, yet another Shockwave Flash crash took my machine down and required a hard re-start, wiping out everything we'd been working on. I love Flash, not. When is it ever OK to write any code that's that half-assed? Anyway, just for giggles I started FF in normal mode. Even though I can't go to about:addons (or anyplace else) by entering it in the address window, I did discover which icons could take me there. I disabled all the add-ons and Firefox still refused to work. SYNOPSIS: FF will only work in Safe mode. If I try to run it in normal mode, even with all the add-ons disabled, FF will not work. I can type any address in the window and it just sits there. But when I re-start FF in safe mode, it all works fine... until the next Flash crash. (BTW, by "fine" I mean it works, although all the media skips like a scratchy record and the CPU usuage is still worriesome.
