This has been happening for awhile now and I have tried a few things to fix it, but I just can't seem to narrow down the cause of it. Of the course of a session Firefox will open additional processes http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a253/ravenillusion/Screenshot2014-05-14144644_zpsedeb97f0.png. Each of these processes is using around 4MB of RAM and can be closed without affecting Firefox. When you close Firefox these additional processes do not close and will prevent you from reopening Firefox until they are closed. So far the most I have clocked were 50 of them and having to close them manually is a pain. I have tried adjusting my addons and that has not solved the issue. I have a feeling and a believe it is related I am getting an error every time close Firefox:

See if you can get more info on these processes with Process explorer. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx

You can for example check if they're disguised malware by richt clicking on them.

If the processes are started by Firefox, Process Explorer should also be able to close them down all at once.

Hi avenIllusion, Whoever designs these viruses are not very creative.

  1. make sure there are not more than one installation of Firefox
  2. Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware
  3. StackHash_0a9e -> hotfix as you said http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2494427 or try windows safe mode.

I look forward to your reply!

Thanks I had forgotten about process explorer. I ran it and it turns out they are being opened by Thunderbird when I click on links in e-mail. I at least have a starting point of where to look now. If you have any ideas of what settings to look at please let me know.

Okay everyone, thank you for your help. I was able to remove an Todo list addon from thunderbird and it solved the issue.
