Wrong sender's name
A few months ago I installed Thunderbird onto a new PC having previously used it on a previous PC (so I'm not a newbie).. However I'm seeing a persistent issue that I never saw before...
I've a regular contact whose name I won't specify but let's call him Roger Smith. What happens is that whenever I post something on a forum (such as this one) and somebody replies, the replies look as if they came from Roger Smith - even though he's got no connection with the actual forum.
It doesn't happen with every forum - for example it doesn't happen with this one - but it does affect most of them. Has anyone else ever reported this and is there anything I can do to correct it?

I am referring to what you see when you click cntl and 'u' when reading an email. That show all the headers. You would also need to post the exact setting in addressbook. GOod luck.

You would need to provide more information, such as the ID you use for the other forums, and the headers for the emails received from them. This is not a Thunderbird issue and needs many details to resolve. Thunderbird does have a feature to show with addressbook names, but you must dig into the details to provide here before some can assess and give feedback. thank you.
It's good to know it isn't an issue with Thunderbird. To be honest, the affected forums are ones I've joined quite recently so what I might do is cancel my accounts there and maybe set up some new accounts and see what happens.
You might also check in the settings>general pane for displaying email addresses. One option is to display name when there is a match. if names seem inappropriate, turn that setting off to see the actual email.
Many thanks David... under Settings->General->Message List I saw an option saying Show only display names for people in my address book (is that the one you meant?)
Either way, I unticked it and it looks like that's solved the problem!!
That was my expectation. Thanks for the feedback.
And thanks for your help, David. Is this something that could get fed back to the developers and maybe get fixed in some future release? Here's what I found:-
1) if i got an email from one of my regular contacts TB was (correctly) displaying the sender's name. 2) if it came from some unknown person I'd (correctly) see their email address. 3) but if someone replied to my post on a forum, TB would sometimes (incorrectly) allocate the name of one of my contacts
To me, that does kinda look like a bug
To be sure that the alleged bug is taken seriously and fixed, you would need to save the email headers from the forum that generated the incorrect display. Without that, there is no starting point. Bugs should be reported at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/home
Okay thanks but what do you mean by the headers? Do you mean the sender's details? And would a screenshot suffice or do I need something more?

That was the clue I needed. I found the forum's email address in addressbook and it had Roger Smith's name as the sender. I changed it to something sensible and now I'm seeing the correct info, regardless of whether Show only display name is ticked or unticked. Thanks for all your help with this.
