I get this instead:

Your connection is not secure

The owner of www.google.com has configured their website improperly. To protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not connected to this website.

This site uses HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) to specify that Firefox only connect to it securely. As a result, it is not possible to add an exception for this certificate.

I have cleared my cache and cookies. No joy. I can get to Google on Chrome, but not Firefox.

Possibly you are not going to the sites you intend and expect. More probably your security software needs to be made to work with Firefox. Please see

If you get other error messages please say what they are.

Please also list all security related software you use with full names and versions. Chances are your security software is interfering with Firefox.

You might also check your desktop for a folder named Old Firefox Data to see whether it has freshly updated files inside. Sometimes during an update Firefox will recognize that it has become sluggish and suggest you can speed it up by restoring some default settings. If you click that button, the Refresh feature runs and your old settings files are moved into that folder on the desktop. Do you see anything like that?
