Hi, I'm trying to export passwords from Firefox 14 and so far I'm stuck. I'm looking for either add-on working with that version of Firefox or manual how to transfer passwords to some newer version of Firefox with password exporter add-on working. So far I have tried to copy signons.sqlite and key3.db to newer version (I tried Firefox 43) but that did nothing. Thanks in advance for any answer.

Download the appropriate versions of Password Exporter from this page; https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/password-exporter/versions/ and use them in conjunction with the the appropriate version of Firefox to export and then import the output of that extension in CSV format.

If you right-click the Add to Firefox button and use Save link as ... you can save each version to hard drive. Then drag the XPI into Firefox to do a "local installation"; once the XPI file is in the browser window Firefox will start installing it.

And don't wait too long to grab copies of that old Legacy extension; all the Legacy extensions will be removed from the AMO website soon.

Hi, I tried installing password exporter on any Firefox 33 and lower and failed (I tried every possible version of the add-on and it still says 'not compatible'). I also tried transferring passwords to some newer version of Firefox but the highest version I was able to transfer them is 32.

If an "age appropriate" version of that extension says it is not compatible, you have something weird going on, like possible corruption of the passwords files or with that installation of Firefox.

I tried to install it on newly downloaded portable version of Firefox before I imported any old passwords.

Firefox 32+ versions store the passwords in logins.json in the profile folder and no longer use signons.sqlite that has been used before. The key file key3.db is needed to decrypt the names and passwords and needs to match the logins.json or signons.sqlite file. Firefox 58+ versions use key4.db for the key file and no longer use key3.db.

If you have a copy of the signons.sqlite file and the matching key3.db file then you can try to import passwords stored in signons.sqlite. Keep a backup copy of the current logins.json and key4.db and key3.db files.

You can make Firefox import the passwords from signons.sqlite and rebuild the logins.json file with these steps:

  • reset the signon.importedFromSqlite pref on the about:config page to the default value via the right-click context menu
  • with Firefox closed, copy signons.sqlite file and the matching key3.db file to the current profile folder and remove an existing logins.json and key4.db

When you restart Firefox then you should have the signon.importedFromSqlite pref with the value set to true. You should see the imported passwords in the Password Manager unless there have been errors with signons.sqlite or with key3.db.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
