On one forum that I use all the time, when I have the list of "Unread topics" up all of a sudden now when I hit the back button it goes back to the top of the list instead of where I was. This is only happening on one site. It was suggested I try a different browser which I did and had no issue with the different browser. This just suddenly started happening a couple days ago. I've cleared all history except cookies as was suggested by a friend. Doesn't happen with my other PC's running FireFox either.

Your current version is outdated for FF have you updated it to the latest version of FF?

When checked "About" FireFox it says I'm running ver. 52.8.1 (32 bit) and that it is up to date. I don't find an "Update button" My PC is still running on Windows Vista, should I download and install ver. 60.0.2 (64 bit)?

You look to be using Firefox ESR. A newer version is available but I don't know if Visa can run it.

As to your issue: I get around this by; When I find a link I want to check out, I open it in a new tab/window. Then when I am done, I close it and am back where I started.

Fred, I clicked on the link and indicates that's why I'm on ver. 52, due to Vista. Is it possible a cookie changed things? I have no issue on my other PC or on this one with Google Chrome. But, Chrome is no longer updatable for security on Vista.

I don't know.

When going Back, Firefox usually will return to exactly where you were, UNLESS Firefox did not cache the page. Sites can send instructions to Firefox not to cache pages, and then Firefox will need to reload them every time you view them, even using the Back button. For that kind of site, the previously mentioned workaround of opening links on that page in new tabs will help preserve your sanity.

However, if this issue only affects Firefox, hmm, do you have normal history settings, i.e., Firefox keeps history and caches files?

Do you want to mention what forum it is, or have you checked their support board to see whether other Firefox users are having the same issue suddenly?

It had been working just fine for years and all of sudden a couple days ago it won't go back to where I was. Goes back to the page, but not to where I was on the page, only the top.No issue if I use Chrome or FuireFox on another PC, so figure it's not the site. The OP is using the 52 ESR and not 60 ESR to be specific as the current ESR refers to 60.0.x ESR.

Fx 53.0 and later including the current Fx 60.0 Release and Fx 60.0 ESR requires Windows 7, 8 (8.1) 10 to run. WinXP/Vista users can only use the legacy Fx 52 ESR. So it is not outdated per say.

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/53.0/system-requirements/ https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/60.0/system-requirements/

The legacy Fx 52 ESR is coming to an end as 52.9.0esr comes out on June 26th and will be EOL on Sept 5 with no more updates. At this point WinXP and Vista users will not have a web browser that still gets updates for these old EOL OS's.

As an anonymous person using a private window and just clicking off the main forum thread list, it seems to work normally. But I notice in your thread there, you mentioned this list:

when I clicked on "unread content" and the list came up

Is that something which might appear if I create a login, view some things, leave for a while, and come back to see what's new? I haven't tested that...

The "Unread Topics" is just above where it says "New Topic" on the right side just down from the header. That brings up all posts I haven't read yet and can be quite a long list. All my other PC's and phone will go back to where I was in the list, except my office desktop which now for a few days goes back, but, within a second returns to the top of the page. Is there any harm or issues if I delete all my cookies in the browser. I deleted all other history & cache, but not cookies. Also, did a clean re-install.

I overlooked your question about cookies: sites set cookies to store a range of information such as an indication that you logged in and that this is a recognized browser. Did you already try to delete only that one site's cookies? You can do that using either:

Manage Data button (Firefox 60+)

You can check that here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

On the left side, click Privacy & Security. On the right side, in the cookies & Site Data section, find the Manage Data button. When you click that, Firefox should list all the sites storing data on your Firefox so you can remove just the one site's data without affecting the others.

There should be a Save Changes button in the lower right corner to complete the deletion(s). If you can't see that, try using the "grippy" in the lower right corner to expand the dialog, or zoom out (hold Ctrl and tap -).

Page Info dialog

While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. You usually will need to log in again.

I did delete all cookies and problem is still there. I can go anywhere else on the site and back button to where I was except for the "Unread Content" list. very odd indeed. I'm getting used to opening in a new window, it takes a little longer, but I don't lose my place in the list. Thanks all for your help.
