I have had this problem previously on my last computer as well - firefox only sporadically updates my tabs when i close out of a session. For example, the last time firefox updated my tabs was a week ago. every time i have exited firefox since then - perhaps 10? times - through various means - whether a crash, clicking exit, or restarting with the browser open, it restores that same session. in the meantime i have changed and added a few tabs and i would like those to be saved, without wiping out the data of the other (600+) tabs i have already saved, which firefox is correctly restoring. Last time this happened i think the problem seemed to spontaneously ease, to where while it wasn't remembering new tabs every time it was a good percentage of the time. Thanks.

now that i think of it the problem didn't "spontaneously" ease. i ended up having a different problem, with there not being any search engine enabled in the toolbar, and i ended up having to add google back as my search engine (which for some reason showed up as "google default") and after that the problem seemed to be resolved. i may have restarted without addons enabled or "refreshed" firefox at some point during that process. i'd prefer not to do that if possible since i like navigating thru my many tabs partly based on the colors of the tab rectangle up top (which i think disappear with a refresh tho not with restarting with addons enabled) and i also like having my history within those tabs saved, which i think also disappears with the refresh option?

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder that stores session data. When sessionstore.js is deleted you lose pinned tabs and Tab Groups and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Use one of these to close Firefox if you are currently doing that by clicking the close X on the Firefox title bar.

  • "3-bar" menu button > Exit (Power button)
  • Windows: File > Exit
  • Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox
  • Linux: File > Quit

Firefox uses the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder to store session data, but this file is only present when Firefox is closed. The sessionstore.js file is created from recovery.js when you close Firefox and is removed and copied to previous.js when you start Firefox to make is possible to restore the session at any time.

You will normally find these files in the sessionstore-backups folder:

previous.js (cleanBackup: copy of sessionstore.js from previous session that was loaded successfully)
recovery.js (latest version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
recovery.bak (previous version of the sessionstore written during runtime)
upgrade.js-<build_id> (backup created during an upgrade of Firefox)

You can copy a file from the sessionstore-backups folder to the main profile and rename the file to sessionstore.js to replace the current file (make a backup copy of the current sessionstore.js).
