You cannot be sure if the message was ever received.
1. You can ask for a return receipt from the recipient. Not everyone will set up their mail client to automatically send a return receipt if asked. Usually the recipient will get a notice that the sender wishes to get a return receipt, and he is asked if he wishes to allow it. This request can be ignored and the sender will not know if the mail was read, or even if it was received.
2. You can request a Delivery Status Notification from the server, but most servers will not send a positive notification (message delivered). They only are required to send a DSN when the mail cannot be delivered (the 'bounce' notice). In the absence of a 'bounce' message, the sender will not know if the mail was read, or even if it was received.
3. You can ask directly. You may or may not get an answer.
Most methods of trying to determine whether a message was received are considered privacy intrusions.
