Go to Tools -> Options -> Display -> Advanced -> Reading -> Open messages in: A new tab

Onno, Your instructions have been completed. Same results. Also, no links are accessible with a full open window, but links operate from the viewing pane.

Confirm you are doing this:

Single left click on email in list: Opens email in 'Message Pane'.

Double left click on email in List: If Tools > Options > Display > Advanced open messages in > selected : A new tab Should open email in a new tab.

Right click on email in list: select 'Open message in new tab' Should open email in a new tab.

I presume at this moment, only emails in the Junk folder or Trash folder are opening in a new tab.

Does this occur if you restart Thunderbird in Safe Mode? In thunderbird Help > Restart with addons disabled.

You are correct, only junk and trash open a new tab. Why would anyone want a new window? All links are disabled! I have tried "Restarting with add-ons disabled" I have tried removing thunderbird program and re-installing. What is strange, I have a laptop with windows 7 and I am not having this issue. I am running windows 10 on the PC with issues.

Some testing: Right click on email in list: select 'Open message in new tab' Does this open email in a new tab?

select email in list: 'Ctrl' + 'O' Does this open email in a new tab?

Toad, It works both ways!!!

Toad, Any ideas why I can not double click to open an e-mail to a new tab?

more options

It is most definately unusual and I'm wondering if this is some bug due to Windows10.

I've heard of people having this issue, but it was in any folder and the issue was finally down to the mouse double click action.

But in your case it is being strangely selective and not honouring the selected double click option based on folder. Is this a pop mail account? Are you using a Global Inbox Local folders?

more options

This is an IMAP account. Not sure on the Global Inbox Local folders question.

Toad, Not an issue with windows live mail.Or my wildblue email page, using windows 10. I am thinking Thunderbird is corrupted on this PC and I need to remove the program all the way into the registry.

Maybe it helps it you change the setting to Open in new window, restart Thunderbird, and change the setting back to open in a new tab

re : This is an IMAP account. Do you synchronise all folders, so a copy is in thunderbird? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/imap-synchronization#w_configuring-synchronization-and-disk-space-usage

You could try an uninstall: Control Panel > Programs and features select Thunderbird and clickon Uninstall.

this only removes the program not your profile folder. Download fresh install from here:

If this does not work, then you could try a new Profile. As you have an imap mail account, all emails are stored on the server, so it would be a case of creating imap mail account to see folders etc. This would be using a completely freshs et of preferences. Use Profile Manager to create a new profile.

Onno, Gave it a try, still not working correctly. Thanks for the input.

Toad, Tried the uninstall and fresh download using the link you provided. Did not fix. If it was a profile issue, why is the issue not rearing it's ugly head on my laptop with windows 7 as an operating system?

Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

Matt, Tried that already,no positive results. Thanks for you interest and input.

All, I truly believe the issue is with windows 10. I am now experiencing a change in the Iheart radio format,(with no explanation),that I do not like. So far the windows 10 has been had a negative impact on my PC.

Profile folders do not only contain emails. It also contains all those preferences you choose and those set by default. There may be differences.

Can you try this: Make hidden files and folders visible. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Show_hidden_files_and_folders

In Thunderbird Help > TRoubleshooting Information click on 'show folders' button a new window opens showing contents of profile folder name.

close Thunderbird now - this is important Look for and delete the following files:

  • localstore.rdf
  • session.json

Close folder Restart Thunderbird.
